Getting ready for thanks giving holiday repairs. Low speed on fan missing, I looked in the beer fridge it wasn't there, now what?
If it's on your Westmorland VW, chances are it's the relay mounted to the driver's side of the airbox (cars with AC). I've found that the switches rarely go bad: at least, if it works on one speed, it should work on all 4.
Or, the resistor on the pass side might be bad too. There should be an AC cutoff/temp sensor mouted to that side (it should have a long probe coming off it and going into the box), and then there's the resisitor. They rarely go bad though, so I'm suspecting it's the relay.
If you have a NON-AC box, then it can only really be the relay.
Good luck finding one. I don't think they're available aftermarket. It's a dealer-only item if it's even still available.
Yeah, it's non-ac. Is the relay part of the fuse panel? My beer is holding down my Bently, beer first, then Bently.
Where are you saying the relay is located? I thought it might be the the thing next to the fan under the hood that has 3-4 wires soldered to it. Multi-speed resistor? I can touch power to this and the fan will run on med and hi, no low speed. Am I on the right track here?
Yeah, I don't think the NON-AC cars had the relay inside the car.
I'm pretty sure your problem is all tied up in that resistor (that you found under the rain tray).
Unfortunately, I don't think the resistor is available separately for sale. I could be mistaken. Try vagcat.com to get the part number, and see if 1stvwparts.com here in the US carries it.
