Some AAZ woes
« on: September 15, 2008, 02:14:57 pm »
So my car has a few little issues... I think it may be the turbo that's at
fault... the car has 330k km and I don't really know the service history all that well... for all I know it may still be the original turbo.

I have replaced the glow plugs, water pump and thermostat, fuel filter, oil and filter, fluids, all belts (including timing plus tensioer), choke cable... so a few things   I also have a 2.5inch straight pipe with resonator and turn down tip.

Here's the issue... the car's exhaust smells very bad (not the usual diesel smell).  Friends driving behind me say their eyes start to water.. it's very sharp.  When I start the car up and put my hand under the tail pipe, small dots of oil are visible on my hand.  If you let the car idle for a while, there's an oil spot on the ground!!

The turbo just hisses quietly, it doen't really sound like a typical spooling.

What seems to be the issue here?  I know that the car has a slight oil leak, so that will be taken care of.  Radiator needs to be replaced because it too is leaking.

If I need to replace the turbo, is it worth it to maybe get a t3 or k24?
I'm thinking of getting the 1.6 boost pin while I'm at it... and maybe get an FMIC pu on from a Sharan or Movano.

Lastly, I've read on another forum that the pump from a 1.6 is a good idea... true?

Thanks in advance!  :D

Maybe the seals are shot on the exhaust side of the turbo?

Sounds that way anyway.

Definitly sounds like the turbo. One truck I saw, the turbo shaft snapped in half completely. It drained 3 liters of oil out the tailpipe within 50 kms, and it smoked something fierce.

If you have the K03, swapping to a different turbo will be harder. Your turbo selection depends on what you plan on doing with the car. Based on what you have said I would say a 1.6 turbo would be better for you.

Ok... being in Europe right now makes things easier  :P

Managed to get a refurbished K24 turbo and an 1.6 manifold... As I understand, this will bolt up to the 1.9's head, right?

Also, I'd like to intercool this thing while I'm at it... has anyone installed a Sprinter intercooler?  Guys here seem to peg that as their favorite, though there is some cutting of the rebar involved.  Some have also used the slimmer cooler from the Sharan.  I'll figure something out...

Snail in question... along with some other junk.

Ok... I'm going to give this one more whirl.

I put up the turbo/manifold for sale, so sorry if I haven't gotten back to any interested parties... But here's the reason:  The car runs poorly with the setup on it, so I think I'll put the turbo on the car and then see if I'll keep it or sell everything with the car... nobody would want the car as it runs now.

I know I need an oil return line for the K24 as well as a downpipe flange for the K24.  I've looked but haven't really found anything... I'll keep trying.

HOWEVER... turbo problems aside, the car really sputters at idle. There is A LOT of blue smoke (until it warms up) and it doesn't have a steady idle.  There's also globs of oil coming out the pipe when this goes on.
I am getting really sick of this thing... but I gotta pony up and git r' done.
What may be causing this?  Is this a symptom of a turbo, or am I looking at something more serious?  Why am I burning oil?  Do I need a rebuild on the engine? (and who does that in the Ottawa area?  South Hull Motors?)

It really is a love/hate deal with this car.  so.. input?

Blue/white smoke that burns the eyes means there is a lot of fuel in it.  Usually it is the injection timing, or it could also be injectors that are starting to get lazy and not atomizing the fuel correctly.
