Will a 85 Jetta IDI tranny fit a 90 Jetta IDI car?
« on: November 17, 2008, 12:42:35 pm »
I blew 5th gear on the way to work today. Not sure if I should try to drive it home with 4 gears. Light whining when I down shift. 1st 4 gears work good, but worried about particulate in tranny, so I will probably flat bed it home. Anyway, I found a local diesel 85 jetta, but not sure if the trannies are swappable.

Also, is it possible that just 5th was affected. No prior warning. Popped out of 5th for the 1st time today under slight bogging. Ran in 4rth to get it to work. Would stay in 5th if I held it there. Can I just rebuild 5th gear and change the seals or should I have an entire rebuild? If the tranny is swappable, I may buy the other 85 Jetta if the parts are swappable.

Any advice would be most apprecitated.

Thanks,

Matt

Go here for trans ratios.

http://www.scirocco.org/gears/

Compair the one you found to the one you have to see if the ratios are good enough for ya.
