Howdy,
I really like the big 4X4 box - the motor started in the first spin of the crankshaft all the time-and it has good heat and defrosters.
but
The 2.1L wasserboxer developed the dreaded leaking headgasket and while it was a peppy motor(for a VW Bus) - I think I'd like to go diesel instead of rebuilding it
-I'm more into good fuel economy than speed so no Subie conversions
I'd like to hear from any of you that converted to VW diesel.
was it worth the hassle?
How about getting the adapters?
anybody have parts for sale?
Has this been talked about before?
I searched but didn't see enough info
thanks
hank
BTW
(I installed a Volvo B20 gas motor in a '74 VW Bay windowcamper in the '90s -we drove all over BC and down into the states with it
it was real smooth and had real heat.)
It can done, maybe not easily but 98 % can be bolt in, no welding ,fabrication if you plan it out and get all the right bits.Almost every day someone on the Samba has at east some of the parts to do it. I would do a bit of research before like the Samba forum and another good one from the UK is club 80-90. You will need engine mount carrier bars, motor mount brackets, motor mounts, bellhousing ,oil pan, oil pump, cooling hoses, etc. Those trucks came with diesels from the factory so everything should be available. I would suggest going the TDI route either full or mTDI , if you can find the right motor etc. The only fabrication issue may be the turbo /left engine mount problem and fitting an intercooler. Many people have done this so the info is out there.
