1.9 AAZ build questions
« on: September 21, 2008, 06:48:36 pm »
I know I need more info, but I would like some opinions if possible.
Just fired up my 1.9 AAZ build consisting of this:
bored .5mm with new pistons and rings, new head, new oil pump,
Giles pump, rebuilt K24, stock intake and exhaust, intercooler to come.  Also TDI transmission - CTN 3.157 final
Timing set to 1mm

Fired right up with no issues, but when test driving it I find the revs hang when shifting gears.  Also power doesn't seem to come on until 3000 rpm.  I was looking more for TDI performance at low RPM.  Should I be looking at using my K14 turbo instead?  Thinking of only 16- 17 psi boost.

Any thoughts?

You should really free up your exhaust some more to get the turbo spooling faster.

Did you tell Giles that you had a K24 on your AAZ? I forgot to tell him that my brother has a T3 on his AAZ when he had a super pump built. The car smoked and the RPMs hung because Giles had built it for the faster spooling AAZ turbos.

At 16-17 pounds I would stay with the K14. It's life will be shortened somewhat because it will be running more, but you will have a lot better bottom end. The VNT turbo is really what gets the TDI moving (amoungst other things of course). Having the tall gearing of the CTN the K14 is definitly a better choice

Couple of thoughts:

Hanging RPMs is often a pump adjustment issue but given that it's a Giles pump that's unlikely... perhaps have someone watch the throttle linkage and see if there's any mechanical binding going on.

Do you have a boost gauge ?? If not... might be helpful to tell you what's going on, but my guess is that you are simply experiencing a big turbo on a small engine... lots of power but it takes time to get there.

I have a AAZ with a hot pump and a K14... I get a couple of pounds of boost almost off idle with 15 psi by 2500 and 22 psi with my foot all the way down at 3000... for me the K14 is about as close to perfect as a non-VNT turbo can get for that engine. 'Course, my stock exhaust and lack of intercooler means I can't sustain 22 psi for long

Thanks for the thoughts Vince.  I have to get my boost/EGT gauge finished for further testing.  Here's what it looks like:

Thanks Tyler - I did give Giles the correct info

I do have a restriction on the turbo inlet as well because of the bigger inlet, I adapted my existing hose to the air filter, but the smaller inlet size in the hose remains

Smoke and hangine revs
« Reply #10 on: September 23, 2008, 05:58:04 am »
Hi Don

I wish you would have just called me to discuss this little problem you
have and i could have told you how to fix it right away.

when you sent your pump in you did tell me about the K24 turbo.
you also said that you would be upgrading your exhaust and down pipe
to PP and the PP intake. these both have a big effect on boost and
how quickly you get the boost.

if you have black smoke and revs are hanging a bit then turn the max
fuel screw down until you upgrade your other parts of the car then
you can turn it up again.

remember all pumps are always tunable on the car. i can only give
you my best estimation of what fuel you will need.

call me Don
Giles

I will call you Giles. I hope I didn't imply there was any issue with what you have done.  My question was to get a feelif a K14 would be better in my application with the CTN gearing because it felt like the K24 was taking too long to spool and with the gearing I am almost doing 80km/hr in second.  I am used to my TDI with the GT15 turbo that spools much quicker.  I  didn't want to bother you as I know you are a busy guy.  My testing was only a few km's around the block to figure out any next steps.  Still need to finish the boost/EGT gauge, intercooler piping and see if I can get Dave to fab me up a down pipe.

Thanks for the reply Giles
