DIY turbo rebuild?
« on: May 02, 2005, 08:30:56 am »
Anybody ever rebuild your own turbo?
Tearing down my Quantum engine for a refresh and I find that there is noticable radial play in the Garretts' bearings, and some sign of oil leakage. No dammage to either wheel and no endplay, so it ought to be saveable, I think.
I see that TurboCity sells a repair kit for that unit for $52. Does anyone have any experiance with installing one of those kits? Is it rocket science?
It looks like you first remove the two housings, then the nut from the compressor end and then press the shaft out. Would imagine that you need to mark the wheel and shaft to insure that it is reinstalled in the same position to maintain balance.
Anybody here ever done one  :?:

if you have a dynamic or static seal, the kits are different for them.

How do you tell that?

The worst part is removing all of those mostly frozen bolts from the hot side.

I hear that! I already had to cut half way through the nuts on the downpipe flange and wastegate cover and pry their remains off the studs. There is more left of the heads of the bolts holding the turbine housing to the center section so with a little luck -------
I plan on putting the torch to the housing to remove the studs once I get it apart, but I'm afraid to do that while the shaft/bearings/seals are still in it.

Thanks!

rebuilding a kkk

How did your turbo rebuild go.
I'm thinking about pulling the kkk apart and checking things.
I got the compressor nut off but the compressor won't come off the shaft.
Do I need a press to remove it?
Anyplace on the net that shows how to rebuild one of these?
