In case anyone wants heavy duty springs for their MK1, rockauto.com has 'em. Stock wire thickness in the front is .456", theirs are .485", stock in the rear is .373", theirs are .406" and variable rate. All four cost about $103 :shock:

I would have ordered 'em a long time ago but shipping to Alaska is $166 UPS ground. :evil:

Well I e-mailed rockauto. They said spicer won't ship usps so they said to get moog springs 'cause they can mail 'em. Anyways Moog has to ship 'em from two different places so it'll be $44 for the front and $44 for the rear just for shipping. :evil: Plus the springs are about $30 more for the whole set. My rant is over for now.

PS. the rockauto people did try though, replying to my e-mails within an hour. :shock:

So after messing around for a few days I finally got a guy on ebay to send a set USPS. It was a sweet deal, $30 for a brand new set of rear moog springs, $48 shipping. Total was a dollar less than the cost of just the springs from rockauto, which would've been $44 more for shipping.
Wire diameter stock is .373, these are .406 and variable rate.

Here's some pics,

The ride isn't much different than stock untill you hit some frost heaves.
Normally the rear end travels up and down more than the front making it feel like a rocking chair now it's lots firmer, you feel just the bump instead of the aftershocks.
There are more of these on ebay if anybody's interested, price went up 5 bucks.
PS. With five people and their junk in the car, the rear used to sit on the bottom, haven't tested it yet with the new springs but I'm sure it'll have some travel left.

if you want more height use MK2 rear shock assemblies it will raise you 3"

any tricks for getting the front struts apart?
There is a bizzare key in them that i have been told you have to modify a socket to undo (or buy the special tool)

anyone else found any easy solutions?

just put a pair of vicegrips on the shaft of the strut, up at the top you wont score it worth worrying about.

works wonders, that or an impact gun.

It's not so much the height I want to change, I just want it to sit level and not bottom out sitting still with half a load. :roll:
If these turn out to be junk I'll look into mk2 parts. Right now I have new shocks on so I'll just leave it, my last set was Boge and lasted 2.5years and still weren't totally shot so these sachs should last a long time especially w/ new/better springs.

for that ! some passat rear assemblies and custom made risers!
thats how i did my first raise on my rabbit just made 6" extensions on the top
of the struts!
