Roof antenna - where to drill?
« on: October 22, 2008, 10:00:46 pm »
Going to be installing a "16v" roof antenna on my ECO.  Can someone with a factory-installed antenna on a MkII Jetta take a measurement?  Just trying to approximate the right location.  Mainly want to know the distance from the top edge of the rear window moulding (closest to the antenna) to the rear edge of the antenna base.

Any help appreciated!

Steve

Yep, I know I have to drop the 'liner, etc. & was going to use my common sense...  I just thought it would be a handy cross-check to have the factory measurement too.

Thanks!

nobody will never know the difference and you know the general location!
but do put some silicone around the hole it will help seal and keep the metal from rusting where you drilled! just a tip?

Yes, early 90's GTI's & Jettas.  8v & 16v GTI's (I had a 90 8v GTI) and 16v Jettas & Jetta GLI's I think.

BTW, a drop of crazy glue on the antenna threads stops those pesky antenna rapists...

Maybe someone can correct me here, but I thought
roof antennae were only for gasoline-engined cars.

The point being to keep the antenna as far from the
engine electrical system as possible (spark plugs, etc)
to avoid any radio interference.

Since diesels don't have spark plugs, etc., it seems to
me the location of the antenna is largely irrelevant.

Or have I misunderstood?

The Fuba antenna that are on VW's is amplified which gives great reception.  I've been toying with the idea of mounting one on my Jetta.

no thats a miss-consumption they were mounted on top just for being the highest point of the car and it was a new style of antenna and looked stylish on top! radio interference was just caused by certain plug wires had nothing to do with being diesel or not!
