50.56mpg: 693km (430.622 miles) using 32.237 litres of diesel (8.5161409 gallons). Mixed highway and city driving (and a lot of sitting in traffic jams). Best mileage I've ever had on the jetta (1.6TD). Diesels are awesome...what other car is there that gets over 50mpg in the city?
Last two tanks 57 and 55 combined HWY/City Imperial gallons, have had the car for 3 weeks so I won"t complain. This 1.6 turbo goes way better than I expected.

You're from Toronto, and calculating using US MPG?
I think there's a bylaw against that
only buy the gold diesel, and add in a cetane booster.
anyone know of a good acetone product that we can just pour into our tanks for better mileage? PowerSystems cetane booster is only sold at the flying J about an hour and a half away near Belleville
Acetone will eat plastic. What is your fuel tank made of? DING DING DING!
hmmmm someone mentioned adding acetone to the diesel.. might have said something else though
edit: here's the post
http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=1664btw, we're not talking huge quantities of acetone here... just very very small amounts

hmmm, imperial gallons. For mine that would be: 60.73mpg: [693km (430.622 miles) using 32.237 litres of diesel (7.091289 imperial gallons)]. So I guess I'm over 60mpg using imperial gallons. Is that what the europeans use when they quote that their tiny little cars are so fuel efficient? My jetta is pretty big and roomy....

I know you can pour some redline into your transmission for an instant gain of 3-4mpg. I know cause I did that.
Re: Gold diesel: never touch the stuff. Regular diesel already costs 87 cents per litre. Gold diesel is just the oil companies' way of ripping people off by convincing them that diesel is like gasoline when it isn't.
for some reason though, I notice mileage drop when not using gold diesel.
I've tried ESSO diesel vs Sunoco Gold Diesel, and I see around 5mpg increase. (city driving)
is your fueling upped? i upped mine, installed an intercooler from a tdi, and upped the max boost to 20psi, didn't drive like an idiot (all the time anyway) and got 6l/100km to the last tank vs my usual 6.8L/100km when it was stock. (45L went 740km vs 48L going 700km stock.)
(93 golf td 1.9)
RE Premium Diesel: I get more power and smoke from Shell Premium diesel. It costs 3 cents a litre more and it's just regular diesel with an additive mixed in at the pump. There are two long hills where I live and I lose speed on them when I'm running regular. When I've got premium in the tank I can accelerate a bit on them.

the turbo works for me OK on hills and I don't need the premium fuel. With summer here though I really could use an intercooler. The problem is where to put it. I want to duct it through the hood but everyone tells me not to do that (I could use one from a chevy sprint if I did that). There is no room at the front of the car at all for an intercooler. My car takes fresh air from the outside right anyway so the air is cool when it goes into the turbo (unlike the N/A cars that take the air piping hot from over top of the engine in that stupid little tube that sticks out of the air filter housing), but I think the turbo warms it up quite a bit before it gets to the engine.
what I wouldn't give to get a good design for an intercooler set up.
oh well, painting the jetta soon (just installed big bumpers from a 92, the most interesting thing about the big bumpers is my coolant gauge is now registering lower than it did with the small bumpers, I think because of the air ducting work that is beneath the front big bumper, that pulls the air into the radiator - neat!).
