to change the belt, you pry the alternator down from the top with a prybar then slip the belts over, retighten all bolts,

i thought the belt was on wrong too but, if it was surely the waterpump spinning backwords would make the car overheat? it has never had any problems with temperature with the belt on as the petrol engine above has. just shredding bloody belts too often

I can gaurantee you there is no way it came from the factory like that. Of course i could be wrong, but i have never seen any VW with that setup and i have never seen ANY vehicle where the serpentine belt would run the grooved side against a flat pulley. I wouldn't be too suprised that the water pump works anyways, because a diesel creates less heat that a gasser, but i thinbk you were just lucky.

ok, well i thought it couldnt be right either but, its been like that for over 6 or 8 years now, its always chewed belts and thats the way the belts have always been fitted.

whats the danger of me flipping it over and running the waterpump the other way? any permanent dammage besides possibly cooking th engine?

ive got a few motors with that belt set up and it is correct ive had no problems currently fitted to the aaz in my vanagon and no probs at all and it gets a hammering its done at least 50k and the belt is still ok.i always lock up to bolts after the spring has tensioned the belts and no probs.here in europe we have both types of belt setups and the tensioners on the first motor dont last as long and some ive seen have literally been falling apart but the later are always ok.

vw really dropped the ball on that one, not groveing the waterpump, its dumb.

I just looked through both my Dayco and Gates manuals and there isn't one system listed that has a setup like that. I conceed that VW may have a system like what some of you are describing, but how can it not cause problems ? How it belt stretch compensated? Look what jtanquay said. Obviously the belt is slipping until it gets so hot that eventually grabs -just like a burnout. Blunt, i don't think you will ever stop having problems if you stay with that setup.

well Im not changeing the setup, Its the same as on all VW 1Y engine codes, and all ABF engine codes when you look into it so it obvioulsy works, no one else has problems, ill just retension the belt as soon as it starts to squeel, its only slackening one bolt and retightening it. thanks for everyones help though.
