Ok so I've posted a lot recently but its my first diesel. But now I have a serious issue at hand. It looks as though something fell in cylinder #3 at one point in time. The head and piston have small dents around them.

And the part that concerns me most is the chunk missing from the cylinder wall.

As well as the small cracks between the valves.

wow... i see pitting of the piston. i'd remove the glow plug for that cyl and check to see if its missing any of the tip  time for new injectors if so!!! and you say chunk missing from cyl wall... how deep are we talking???
I recently installed new glow plugs, The old ones were fine. And I have some new GTD injector nozzles the I need to get set and tested.
Don't worry about the cracks between valves, that is normal.
The rest of it though....
cracks between valves are normal
but that beat up piston and head are not but can be saved? need to check valves make sure thier not bent and seats are not damaged
Duane
did the car run like this?
Yeah Ive been driving it. Valves look ok, suprisingly. I'm gonna see what I can do about cleaning it up as I cannot afford to change the engine nor do I have the time or space.
The chunk you are talking about as missing on the cylinder, is it the light spot at the right side near the top of the second shot showing the cylinder bore? If it's higher than the top of the top piston ring, it won't destroy the ring. It looks to me as if this is older damage that a P.O. "fixed" by just removing loose metal bits. If the car was running OK before and you're just trying to keep the car running, I would check the valve seat contact for that piston. If the valves are sealing, I would assume they were replaced after the damage.
Obviously to do this right or for a long term keeper, the damaged parts should be replaced.
I was about to toss it all together but I have the wrong head gasket. Grr. This has been nothing but a huge piss off all weekend. If the motor last until next year when I'm done my GTI it can have a TDI swap.
