Okay...Got her off. I decided to drop the whole sub-frame and clean it up, and put in fresh bushings etc.
1) It's impossible to "undo the lower bolt and nut to remove the universal joint steering assembly" as Bentley says...There is no nut, for starters
There isn't enough room unless you really lower the arse end of the whole assembly. Then guess what else wants to come out...
You
should remove the bolt completely though...if you look close enough, the threads from the bolt pass through a flat area of the spline drive of the rack and prevent its removal...
2) Make sure the rubber boot on whatever rack you have is in good shape...or you'll end up with the crap I found that ground itself to death on the rack and compromised the seals....
Too make matters worse; taking the 13mm nuts off the rack on the power side will not release the rack from the sub-frame. The locking splines on the studs enter the flanges on the power rack too. I had to sacrifice a sawzall blade for each one. Those bad boys would not drill out easily. I will not be reinstalling those damn studs. I will use something else.
