my clutch is making some throwout bearing noise. how long can i run it before needing to be replaced? it has been making noise for about 2 months and olny makes the noise when the pedal is depressed.

Impossible to give an accurate answer, best to change it out as soon as you can within reason.

my advice is to not press the clutch pedal for long. mine's been making a growl for a while now. by a while i mean about 1/2 a year :wink: and i'm not gentle with the tranny... but i do not hold the clutch for long... i'd say drive as is, but in the mean time look to get it fixed in the near future.

as soon as ai heard the noise start i then started to press the pedal as little as possible. i dont plan on running enough power to justify a stage 2 or 3 clutch

Maybe you should check your trans. fluid level. Could be low? But it sounds like its to late.

describe "throw out bearing noise"

To be honest, many diagnose tranny/clutch noises as TOB noises. 99% of the time it has nothing to do with the TOB.

For the record, I have seen 1 5sp 020 TOB that was bad. I have seen thousands of 020 TOBs

at speeds above 20 mph there is a slight kindof grinding noise when i push the clutch pedal in. below 20mph it doesnt happen. its not a loud noise its kinda like a brake pad noise wehn the pads are out and its metal on metal. that kinda noise. i thought it was the TOB simply because its got a lot of miles and it only happens when i push the pedal in.

sounds more like an inner cv joint to me.

the TOB will make noise even if the car is stationary. That is of course, if you had a bad TOB

BTW, no need to fear a throwout bearing replacement on an 020 tranny... unlike many other designs the throwout bearing is replaceable in a few minutes and there's no need to remove the tranny. Meaning: if you're not sure that it's causing the noise... go ahead and replace it and see.

Or perhaps you already knew that ??!!!

i dont know how. a friend borrowed my bently about 6 months ago and i havent gotten it back from him yet as he lives about 2 states away

wouldnt the inner cv joint make noise regardless of where the clutch is engaged at. and why would the TOB make noise when the car isnt even moving?

no because when you push the clutch in, you change the loading on the CV joint. Inner CV joints can be VERY hard to diagnose if you dont take them apart and inspect. Tehy can also make wierd noises and even be intermittent.

Like was said earlier, you can always throw a TOB at it and see what happens.
