CoolAirVw ; That is another problem I face. The OE inner joint and shaft (one piece) is over $500 and to install a used one might open up a whole different can of worms. The aftermarket complete axle (new china) is $80 but that could lead me astray.
And on top of all this I'm only looking for a short time fix. In time I'm going to convert this car to a TDI 5sp. At that time I wouldn't need those $500 tripode joints as they didn't come with the 5sp transmission.

if you're going to change to 5spd then go with the chinese ones.
Just an update; I removed the right side axle today and found quite a bit of play in the inside joint that I couldn't feel as well when it was connected to the wheel and transmission. I opted for the (new china) $80 axle as a short time fix. I road tested the car and no shimmy.

I guess "TIME" will be the real test.
Thanks to all that voiced an opinion.

So the wiggle test is the best way (but not a perfect way) to tell which side is bad, you can take it to the bank.
