• Does anyone know if one could use a 1.8 16v intermediate shaft gear to run the oil pump to delete the vacuum pump? I know, it sounds funny, but for my TD drag motor I'd like to delete the vacuum pump as to try and free up some drag on the motor. I know that the 16v motors have a dist. delete and use a gear on the oil pump to the intermediate to still drive it. The question is, do the diesel oil pumps run the other direction because of the timming belt rotation, or is the gear on the diesel IM shaft make the oil pump turn in the correct rotation?

• I'm pretty sure the diesel gear teeth are cut the other direction, so I don't think it will work.

• Could you go with an electric oil pump, toss the vacume pump, and figure a way to get rid of the IM shaft all together?  Perhaps fill in the hole with a plain roller for the belt to ride on?  That would save you some rotating mass.  Of course it might be a *** to figure out :lol:

• The diesel teeth are cut in the other direction because of the timming belt  orientation making the IM shaft rotate in the opposite direction. So if I just use the IM shaft from a gas motor and use the 16v oil pump gear to IM shaft gear it should work. Wait.... the 16v gear is for a gas IM shaft not a diesel IM shaft. Damb.

• Why not just take the insides out of the vac pump. Although not perfect may well reduce its loading to 10% of what it was.... :idea:

• the inner diameter of the gasser gear is smaller than the radius of a diesel intermediate shaft. Also, the gasser gear is cut in the opposite direction with less of an angle on the gear teeth.
  
  I managed to fit a diesel gear on a gasser intermediate shaft! But I don't think that is what you are going for.

• I've got a couple of junk vac. pumps laying around, and I'll check to see if its posable to just use the oil pump to IM gear part. I doubt that there would be any real gain from not running a vac. pump but will really clean up the look of the engine though.   :roll: .

• what about taking a vac pump to a machine shop and having them cut it down to the point where you would just have the drive shaft sticking up. Then have them make a cover for it, maybe even a bearing in the cover. You know just enough to drive the oil pump and save 4oz  :lol:
