« on: August 10, 2008, 05:09:09 am »
hi guys i have just fitted a manual pump i have just had built for my 1.9 tdi. and a new cambelt and tensioner. i started the motor and she runs but smokes. i am going to turn the pump slightly to get rid of some of this but i have been told to set the pump up first with a dial guage. does anybody know the settings.    cheers phil

Mine is almost impossible to get at with a dial indicator, so I carefully set it before installing the engine, and mine was way too retarded as well. I had mine set at 1.05mm. I had 220 bar injectors, which will retard the timing more than 180 bar ones, and had one of Prothe's cam plates if that makes any difference. I finally had to just set it by ear as I had no clue where it should be.

hi jimfoo,
thanks for the info i now have something to work from.the engine is actually in a sports boat. after fitting it we came to try it out and there was no power at all.yet when it was in the audi car it went well.on taking the front cover off to check the belt i found the timing was out by two teeth, hence the power loss.this i think was due to the tensioner pulley casing adjuster being broken allowing belt belt to slacken enough to jump a couple of teeth. new one on way. so thought while all apart i would have the pump overhauled, injectors etc, and the manual says set fuel pump with dial gauge. usually set by ear but thought best check. hopefully all up an running next week.  thanks again  phil.
