Turbo head part number
« on: December 11, 2008, 12:25:16 pm »
I'm going through my pile of old parts to see what I have and what I'm missing to put together a 1.6 TD motor.  I have a TD block and a number of heads on the shelf, I'm pretty sure I have at least one turbo head but I can't remember what part numbers differentiate the turbo and NA heads.  Can anyone help.  One of the heads appears to have the turbo exhaust valves but I want to be sure.

Thanks

OH SNAP!!!!

No they are not the same!!!

The heads are made of different materials and different exhaust valves.

There are threads here with the exact info but I'm not searching for it..

the diameter of the pre-chambers on the TD engines is slightly smaller than the non-turbo cups and so measuring those is a definitive answer.  I'd have to pull out the caliper's to confirm, and I'm lazy too...

Andrew

Now that's interesting..

The head I bought from Tyler way back had some small cracks in the precups so I knocked them out and had some from an NA head fitted. My main reasoning behind it at the time was to lower the compression a tad due to the boost I was planning on running.

I have about 8 precups I think sitting around that must be out of a TD head as they are smaller.

I can never seem to find the right numbers on the block to identify which type it is. I have four blocks to look at and I think i just realized i keep looking at the head numbers but never looked at the block numbers before. where is the stamp on the block?

Look at the block as if its in the engine bay horizontally.
Infront of cylinder number 3, third in towards the tranny from the left, there is a flat spot. Often VERY hard to read. It should say two letters followed by numbers. Mine Reads MF #####(i can't make out the numbers anymore)
Hope that helps. try solvent and a tooth brush.

Every "N" head (last letter in part # is an N) I've seen are TD heads.
Look for a dot on the prechamber,... that's a TD.
