Well i got my pump timing dialed in thanks to some help from a buddy who owns a shop an knows what he's doing (cough Fine Tuning in seattle cough) an the car is running awesome! the smoke went down a TON, but im still getting some blue an im looking for a few other opinions on the possible cause.
have not comp tested yet, will be very soon...
the large majority of the smoke comes after the car is at operating temp, when i sit in traffic an the temp starts to climb up. if i sit for several minutes, probably about 5-10 in heavy traffic, it will start to smoke (blue) at idle, and POUR out when i accelerate. it gets pretty bad on the commute home as all i do is sit in traffic. it doesn't smoke very bad at all, maybe a little puff or two off idle under normal driving. Even in 100 deg oustide temps, it runs great. but if i sit in traffic, it definatly starts burning oil.
yesterday was the worst its been ever. i sat on the offramp for probably 10min plus an she was getting up towards the red. i could see just a bit of smoke at idle, and when i pulled out an started driving in was blowing smoke for a few miles until i got home.
im thinkin valve guide seals, whats your guy's thoughts?

I would bet on the valve seals as well.

I'm going to vote rings.
Do a compression check and report back.

That's possible for sure. Easy to check as well.

i'd pull the breather tube coming out of the valve cover then rev the engine a few times and see how much air is coming out of the tube ......
the more the rings are worn out , the more blow blow and more air coming out of the breather , and the more air coming out , the more oil that will come out with the air , straight into the turbo , then burnt in the engine .

1.6 NA diesel
i have pulled that off before, an it is blowing a fair amount of air. is this comparable to a gas burner? cause i wouldn't say its much worse than my 16v which doesn't burn any oil at all...if i leave it off (accidentily haha) it does blow a bit of blue out of that tube as well. not very much, but its noticeably blue
comp test coming next week when i can get back out to seattle, thanks guys for the input

How much topping up of the oil does it need? Is the baffle in the valve cover present? Retarded timing also makes bluish smoke.

it goes through less than a quarter of the fill zone in a week w/ two trips to seattle. it burns no oil if its all hwy. only smokes in 1st gear an a little into 2nd right off idle. unless i sit in traffic for 5-10min.
timing is spot on an verified. suppose to be at .88, but with the advice of a good friend its set at .90. i dont think its retarded timing causing the smoke
