Alternator mounting question
« on: July 12, 2008, 06:56:56 pm »
If I were to take the vw alternator from the original mounting on an aaz , flip it, and mount it on the otherside of the engine, it'll be spinning the opposte way. Will it still work??

Thinking of this for the conversion into my Tracker I'm working on........

Alternator mounting question

Interesting !!

My guess:  an alternator generates AC internally so it shouldn't matter which way it turns... the things I'd wonder about would be mechanical:

- will the bushes like the commutator turning in the other direction... particularly if there's already a wear pattern ?

- will the pulley want to loosen its nut ?

Bet the answer to both is "nah"... give 'er a shot with an electric drill and see what happens ??
