Compression Test and Headgasket Questions
« on: July 06, 2008, 03:39:06 pm »
I tested compression today before injector replacement, new timing belt and possible headgasket replacement.  The first compression test consisted of turning the engine over for a very brief time (~1-2 seconds).  Test two consisted of turning the engine over for 5 seconds on each cylinder.

Results(1,2,3,4) in psi:
Test 1: 375,330,350,380
Test 2: 490,430,435,440

These numbers are all well within spec and I am quite pleased.  The front tab of the head gasket has been wet recently, the car uses a very small amount of coolant, and the coolant has black specs in it, so I was dreading a blown head gasket.  Apparently the gasket is not yet blown but I am preparing for a 100% traveling job using this car and I don't want to have problems on the road.  Should I just set in and replace the head gasket at this point?  What is the rated service life of a head gasket?  I was wanting to do a coolant flush and I have all parts for the hg job, so it seems like something I should do.  However, I'm a little worried about damaging something else in the process.  Any input is appreciated.
