« on: July 05, 2008, 10:14:12 am »
Yup, 530 miles from home stuck in Helena MT, turbo locked up just North of Butte heading this way, completly toasted and started puking oil about 3 miles after that, engine ran away up the canyon where cel phones didn't work. Yup, guess I'll just live here now. Can't get home.
I stuck a vac plug in the fitting on the oil filter to stop the oil, was ab le to get the last 25 miles in chocked up NA mode. Going to attempt the return 530 miles tomorrow. Thinking it may be time to go T3/T4 so I can get a turbo that won't blow up as easy.

Wow, thats a bummer. sorry to hear it.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

that was some bad luck :(

your description gave me an idea, I'm fitting a valve on the turbo oil feed, that way I can close it when the engine tries to run away on turbo oil.

That does suck. You were running pretty high boost though weren't you, though I don't remember what turbo you were running. My effing clip came off the cold start again, luckily closer to home and with a bunch of Rovers, so I had a tow home. Think I'm taking the thing off. I never use it anyway.

damn that sucks! you run an EGT gauge?  maybe just too high egt's? past 20 psi the K24/T3 runs more back pressure than the compressor makes psi... andy2 on here measured it on his car..  maybe a bigger exhaust would help though.

what psi were you running when she blew?

What you need as is a bigger T3 possibly the merc's T3 (3L TD) as its a cheap junkyard turbo and use this manifold that was once for sale on here:

http://vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=12599&highlight=manifold

The merc T3 is a decent upgrade with its 45 trim compressor and .48 A/R turbine housing vs stock T3 (35 trim comp and .38 A/R turbine). This turbo will spool slower than the stock turbo but will work well at 25-27psi all day long. When using a bigger than stock turbo at higher boost pressures a better flowing intake manifold is then almost manditory. The stock manifold can be modifled to flow better.Good intercooling is also very important.

Just my 2 cents

Yes jimfoo, I was running high boost, key work "was". after the first destroyed turbo i backed it down. No fast shifts causing it ti bark, kept it under 25 psi ad just drop nicer in general.

K24 for reference.
Sounds like it's time to leave your cold start un hooked as you mentioned, if ya don't use it may as well eliminate the possibility of a problem.

Ya I have am EGT gauge, it had been running around 900 deg. I kept it under 1200. If it did go that high it was for a couple seconds and that's it. When this one went I was at the base of a hill just starting up, EGT's were @ 750 and boost was hovering around 15. Made a hight pitched "zing" and it was all over.
I don't thing bigger exhaust it going to help here, I l already have 3" turbo back.
It's time for a beefier turbo end of story, I need something that spools as good or better than a k24 yet has better flow. A 24/26 hybrid turbo would be a good situation if the shaft was larger.

I found a VNT 15 but I don't think it will move the amount of air I need moved, a VNT 24 would be ok though.

Yes I agree, I need a better turbo. I was thinking of a T4 Garret with a small exhaust housing, ceramic ball bearings and a slightly larger compressor than the K24.

The Merc T3 would be a good up grade but I cant have it spooling later then the K24, as it is now the 24 doesn't start to spool until 2500, I cruise right around 3k rpm so I need something that's spooled already,  a VNT 24 (ish) would be perfect if I could find one. A VNT 15 would be fine until I tried to go past 3500 rpm then I would run out of air and EGT's would be a problem.

I have a spare intake I'm going to put a log on top of for that end, Intercooler wise I'm covered, already have a FMIC in place, 20" x 12" x 3" bar and plate.
