It doesn't matter how many horsepower you've got at the wheels if you can't get your car into first. The sad truth is that my shift linkage has more slop than adjustment (is there any adjustment?) so I'm stuck in the driveway. :evil:

What kind of modifications are you using on your shifters? I am willing to consider OEM parts for different models of cars or aftermarket. When at the wrecker I noticed a heavily weighted forward/backward shifter link. I'd like to know of some more robust bushings and ball sockets too.

I just put in a manual clutch cable even though Bentley says it is not interchangable with the automatic A2 cables. I'll be keeping the auto cable in the trunk in case of emergency.

OEM replacements at least get you out of the doorway - Had to do mine because of mileage - that and I used one for delivery -

Consider that in a 4 hour shift of driving - I completed 2000 shifts - multiply that by 6 nights a week - and you see the wobble of everything.

As for clutch cables - yes Bentley said no - I pulled it after the auto cable dropped out on me in another city - and I had to speed shift myself home.

Haven't had to do that since my days running a 13 speed - charcoal burner

Here's some part #s that I found today. VW Canadas prices are about 4 times Altrom.ca's prices on the rods. One of the bushines is 20 bucks at VW vs. 80 cents at Altrom!!!!!!

191 711 574 - long 220 mm socket ended rod
191 711 595 A - short 74 mm socket ended rod
171 711 067 B - clear relay shaft bushings (there is a different style white plastic bushing that you may need instead)
191 711 590 A - bushing for shaft running through transaxle mount
191 711 083 - relay shaft bracket (VW says you have to buy this if the main shift rod bushing is worn out), cost is 83 bucks!!!!

If anybody knows the part # for the rubber bushing that goes between the main shift rod and the relay shaft bracket I would appreciate hearing from you. For the time being I will jam some pop bottle material in the void.

If there is an entire rebuild kit available through Altrom I'd like to here about that too, I wouldn't mind getting that instead of ordering a pile of little pieces. It's a shame their website doesn't have a bit better description of the parts they have.

there's a place here in Dover DE that gets a whole shifter bushing rebuild kit that I got for my 83 Rabbit diesel I think it was 12bucks or some thing. I installed 5 of the 9? bushings and got back 3gears!

BTW I'm pretty sure that they are factory parts.

You can also check Roger Brown's "Missing Linkz" replacement parts. The are different from the stock pieces, but much better quality and they don't wear out as quickly. I went to a local bearing shop and walked out with a bag o' parts that ended up replacing all my OE stuff with greaseable heim joints and bronze bushings. This system allowed for a very short shift upgrade, very accurate and still, zero slop after 1.5 yrs.

I'm going to order a bunch of the Altrom stuff just to see what it is. I held up traffic a bunch of times yesterday when I couldn't find gears at all or couldn't find the gear I needed. :oops: Would be nice to have a microfiche.

Things worked out REALLY well but I'm going to end up with a pile of stuff I won't need for a few years. Here are the two things I picked up today...everything was in but they didn't know the retail prices so they politely asked me to only take what I needed today. Things are fantastic now that I've got these two kits installed plus the two socket ended rods. It would have been a huge help to have the special tool 3104 (T03 104 000 34 ZEL) to keep the shifter knob from moving around.

191 798 211 A has two connecting link bushings, two relay shaft bushings, two transmission mount bushings, a main shift shaft bushing, and four foam washers. It cost me a ridiculous 7.80CDN. :lol: What it does not come with is the round knob for the relay shaft or the bolt that goes through the transmission mount. You will need both of these parts so get them too. The Altrom parts in this baggie were all VW/Audi OEM parts.

You will need to remove the relay shaft bracket by taking out three 13 mm bolts accessed from above. Once you've got that out you can finish ripping out the old bushings attached to it. Contrary to what I was told, you can remove and replace the big bushing. If it is completely rock solid you can drill out and then replace the two rivets that hold the bracket together.

1H1 798 201 had the mount bolt required above as well as some more of the bushings it runs through. Cost was 2.60CDN

More to come in a few days. If things are really ugly under the hood you will also need a new relay shaft and main shift rod. At 400,000 km they were still servicable on my car.

Wow, I covered a 9 hour pizza delivery shift today and didn't miss gear change or grind a gear either!

191 798 116A showed up today too, it is a Meistersatz Skift Mechanism Repair Kit. This is some interior stuff. It contained a lower ball and socket, a gasket, a roll pin, two collars, and two lock nuts. It does not contain the eccentric (or upper ball/socket if you've got an older A2). Cost was 15.90 and I don't need it so I'm giving it to my brother.
