My m-TDI build - New style tensioner???

ok so i bought a tensioner for my timing belt and it's way different than the one that came off.  did they upgrade or something?  all the online parts places look like the same as the one i received, but not like the one that came off.



that shows how each tensioner is secured.  the old style is much firmer and no slop, whereas you can see the other way is quite sloppy, but once the belt is on and under tension it should be fine, right???





side by side comparison.  obviously not the same  :o

i'm also worried about my int shaft.  it's quite hard to turn (requires both my hands on the pulley to turn, but turns quite nice with a wrench on the nut.  i put a bit of oil on the smooth surfaces before installation.  not much but i got it all around.  is that normal???

The new style tensioner is supposed to slip into a slot on the rear timing cover. Then, you line up the slot on the pin and the slot on the inner and outer parts of the bearing.

When you say your intermediate shaft is hard to turn: is that with the belt ON or with the belt OFF?

If it' with the belt on, then that's about normal. If it's hard to turn with the belt OFF, then you have to inspect your intermediate shaft bearings, the oil pump, or your vacuum pump.

belt is off and the vacuum pump isn't even hooked up... i can imagine that it will only get worse with the vac pump on since the oil pump will be turning as well.  i did get new int shaft bearings installed, so they must be nice and tight, but it just seems too tight to me.  i mean i'm on the pulley with both hands giving it a pretty good tug (i'm not that strong though) and it moves.

as for the 'slot' on the timing cover, i see one, but it doesn't stop the tensioner movement whatsoever.  i just wish i could have one like the old one i have... not that this new one is complicated or anything  :roll:  i'm sure once i figure it out i'll feel like an idiot for a few seconds though  :lol:

I havn't seen that style of tensioner ever.When you tension it up you'll see if its moving properly.

So you intermediate shaft is hard to turn without the vac pump installed in the block,Correct?

Has the block recieved new shaft bearings?Some bearing are made to where you need to ream them out after install for proper sizing and others can be installed without any further work.

you haven't seen the one tensioner with those two 'forks' sticking out?  it almost seems like it is only on the 1Z motor, because it shows it on ETKA, but not on any of the online parts places.

yep shaft is hard to turn (very snug) without vac pump installed.  so it is pretty much just the int shaft spinning in its new bearings.  i can imagine that they need to be nice and tight for no belt slop and good oil pressure, but it just seems as though the timing belt could slip over the pulley :(  i'm guessing that this problem won't cure itself as in the int shaft will 'loosen' the holes?

so with new bearings how do you ream them out? special tool?

So what is the purpose of the forks on the tensioner?

look at the pic at top.  it 'locks' it in place and keeps it from moving. probably not a lot of stress on the piece of steel sticking out due to the lever effect.  i just fail to see how the new style tensioner 'secures' itself.  i would imagine that this could lead to the timing belt jumping a tooth given the right circumstances.
