you need to measure piston protrusion to find the correct number of notches...

it currently has a 1 notch gasket in it.

i'm just wondering if the 40 over makes a difference when going to buy a new gasket or not. i already have in my possesion a new 1 notch gasket but i just found out that the motor was rebuilt and is 40 thou over.

that won't matter use that gasket! notches have to do with piston protrusion 40 over won't hurt the gasket still will work!

A regular gasket will fit, if you have a close look at the piston top, you can see that the 0.040" piston is machined down a bit so that it will fit the stock gasket.

always measure piston protrusion when doing a head gasket.  Only way to know for sure you have the correct # of notch gasket.

Use dowels or old head bolts with their tops removed and a slot cut in them for a flat head screwdriver to spin them  back out to hold the gasket in position while installing the head.  The top edge of the .040 over piston should be beveled to clear the head gasket if it isn't 100% centered, or so we are lead to believe.
