I don't think you need to do anything to the timing cover. I may be wrong, but as long as you're putting an AAZ from a MK3 into a MK2, you should be able to use the stock AAZ timing cover.Timing according to Bentley should be 0.80 +/- 0.02 mm. That's what I set my dad's AAZ in his Vanagon to. It purrs and has plenty of gusto.But I think most of the Canadians here push is to 1.00 mm.

heyyou should set you pump timing to .95mm much better.why are you not using the AAZ pump? you won't be able to use your 1.6L pump because the mounting bracket is the wrong sizeunless you change that one too.the fueling curve is all wrong with the 1.6L pump too.if you have the 1.9L pump use that .1997 was the year for the split two piece timing gear.Giles
