1.9 and 1.6 boost pin spring lengths.
« on: April 15, 2008, 09:37:52 pm »
I just got a 1.6TD boost pin for my 1.9TD. When I pulled out the original I was surprised that the 1.9 spring was almost twice as long as the 1.6 spring. Is this normal? Is it best to use the 1.6 spring when changing boost pins?
Also there was a significant amount of what apeared to be black oil in the cover above the diaphram when I first pulled the cover off of my 1.9. Is that normal?
I am having a hell of a time getting decent mileage from my car. I usually get only around 30mpg. And have done all the normal things to try and remedy it. What are some things that someone might not immediately think of that cause poor milage?
Cheers for great site!

I dont know about the spring lengths....but I know that the 1.6 spring is stiffer therefore doesnt add fuel until you reach I think 8psi whereas the 1.9 pin adds fuel at 4psi.
As for the oil being at the top....thats normal because it comes from the intake....oil that comes from the turbo and the breather.

Length doesn't matter, it's how stiff it is. (This is not porn BYM  ) The stock AAZ spring is weak as the pin has no taper to it, so it soon bottoms out. The 1.6 spring actually has to do something with boost applied, so it is stiffer to help regulate fuel in relation to boost. Just make sure the 1.6 spring fits over the steel sleeve on the bottom of the seat. If it doesn't, you can bend it open a little bit. You don't want it wearing aluminum off and getting it in the pump.
