Factory air-water intercoolers?
« on: April 26, 2005, 08:33:36 am »
What factory cars sold in the north american market had air-water intercoolers?  The only one that comes to my mind is Maserati biturbo... but I'm hoping there are other more common models that I am overlooking.  I want to know where I might find a cheap air-water intercooler, and I am wondering if a wrecking yard search may be in order.

Also, are there any other effective "budget" alternatives to an air-water intercooler anyone has tried successfully... IE: has anyone successfully adapted a heater core to air-water intercooler duty?  Transmission cooler?  If so, I'd be interested in hearing the details and how well it worked.

New spearco air-water intercoolers are expensive!  :o  Thanks.

PM malone, he has one for his coupe project. He is looking at selling them for the TDI crowd. I don't remember the price, but it was alot less then spearco. As I recall he uses a TDI intercooler, and then has a water jacket made around it. Any way he will have the details.

A few ford products came with factory air water intercoolers. Some SVT mustangs and lightnings as a recall.

Let's see - GMC Syclone and Typhoon, Toyota Celica All-Trac Turbo, and I've heard the '04 TDI. That's all I can really think of right now. A manufacturer has to be really strapped for space to use an Air/Water.

I'd definitely make my own, and wouldn't hesitate to use heater cores to shed the water's heat.
I repair, maintain and modify VW's and BMW's.

I had considered putting in an intercooler and had heard that subaru uses an air to water IC.  I was going to use my AC condenser to run the hot water through (since my AC is bad) and circulate through the intercooler with an always on electric pump od some kind.  Also, was planning on using radiator hose for the intake connections.  It usually runs 10 to 15 psi in the cooing system and comes in a wide variety of shapes and sizes at the local parts store...  Of course I've never done any of that.. it all works fine in theory...

The Subaru WRX STI does not use a water to air inter cooler, its just a air to air intercooler.

I know since we have one hear at work that I have been eyeing

Subaru does have an air/water intercooler. I can't remember what model though.

My a/w is based on a brand new TDI SMIC core. It is very big for an air/water, much bigger than the Spearcos I've seen. Feel free to ask or PM me if you want to know more about it.

Would you happen to know the part number for the new air/water intercooler? I'm assuming you bought it new? I was trying to look it up a while back but I couldn't get the part number as I haven't got my hands on the newest updates to that program that we're supposed to have a code name for but I can't remember it right now.  :D

I only bought the stock TDI intercooler and we did the a/w conversion. Pictures here, here, and here.

Are you asking for the part # of just the stock (not air/water) TDI intercooler? There isn't really a part number for the complete air/water intercooler.

BTW how did you get the 79 GTI in the states? Did you import it from Canada? I used to have one, and a 80 GTI as well.

I was hoping for the part number for the stock air/water intercooler. It would be nice if it was relatively inexpensive  :D

I got the GTI from a friend. It's been passed along a few times. It was apparently imported by a German doctor in the early 80's. They allowed him to keep the stock bumpers but made him put these rediculous side markers on it and sealed beam headlights. Hopefully I'll get around to restoring it one day  :(

So are you referring to the stock Subaru air/water intercooler that you quoted in your earlier post? In that case I do not have the part #, sorry.

Just to be clear, there are no stock VW air/water intercoolers.

I was referring to the air/water used in the new TDI's....although you might not have that in Canada.

The early 90's (about 91-96?) Subaru Legacy RS had an air/water intercooler.  I'm not sure whether or not the U.S. Legacy turbo of the same era had the intercooler, though.

My bad. I'll see if I can get the part number for you tonight (I don't have access to ETKA @ work).

I searched on Google, and it looks like there weren't any Legacy RS's in the U.S.
