dial gauge conversions
« on: April 04, 2008, 08:22:52 am »
Hi Gang,
We bought the diesel timing / timing belt tools from prothe on ebay but the gauge is in 1000ths and our Bentley gives the timing specs in mm.
The belt went in just fine but motor doesn't starts as good as before the belt replacement.( read barely runs)
the gauge reading ( if I did it right is .020(?) [20 thousandth]
is there a metric to inch conversion for the specs
1mm=.0394 in just messes me up.
spiritual advice needed
cheers

Ya you need to set it @ .040 that will give you 1.02mm

.020 inches is equal to 0.51 millimeters.

.039 inches is equal to 0.99 millimeters.

.040 inches is equal to 1.02 millimeters.

.041 inches is equal to 1.04 millimeters.

.042 inches is equal to 1.07 millimeters.

.043 inches is equal to 1.09 millimeters.

I'd set it to 0.037 if it is a NA

or if you have a calculator in the garage, no internet handy and can remember 1 inch=25.4mm  or write it on the back of the gauge

.040" X 25.4mm = 1.016mm

if you have the mm you want in the Bentley just divide it by 25.4 for the inch

.95mm / 25.4mm = .0374"

hhmm, maybe I do too many conversions all day at work.

Thanks for all the conversion help ,guys.

I'm still having a hard time getting the timing right

Which way is clockwise? standing looking at the crank end or flywheel end?
I see that spinning the motor by the starter it rotates counter clockwise
standing in front of the car and standing at the crank pulley end it spins CW

I'm rotating the crank to tdc and align the notch on the flywheel with the marker on the case.

Install the dial gauge and turn the crank backwards til the pointer stops moving- which is only a few degrees on the crank( just out of view in the timing hole) zero the gauge

turn the crank back to tdc and read the gauge I get .020

I'm wondering if I'm spinning the motor by hand the wrong direction

I'd sure like to get the little darling back on the road before Monday
thanks

Clockwise is while you're standing at the passenger side of the engine with the wrench in your hand rotating the engine.

If you're getting 0.020" you're probably doing everything correctly... you just need to loosen the pump mounting bolts and rotate the pump counterclockwise (ie push the top of the pump towards the head if you're standing in front of the engine) until you get the desired setting.

0.020 is pretty much what I seem to get with the pump initially fully retarded (ie as clockwise as possible when first installed).

I spent most of yesterday checking why it would start but ran crappy
so I check the T/belt timing again
Checked the injection timing at least 4 times and got .037
then thought I better see if there is any fuel at the filter -nope
Being 6'4" I jacked the front of the Golf up so I wouldn't have to bend over all day
I think maybe the fuel siphoned back to the tank. So I hooked up a jerry can full of diesel and tried again - big difference with fuel in the system
Runs sweet again
thanks for spiritual advice and all
cheers
