So on the advice of my mechanic I took my pistons out to do my rod bearings and the rings on the pistons. He said my main bearings will not be a problem and to not touch them so the crank is still in the car but is there anything else I should do while this is out? It is a 1.6L TD and I am intercooling it and upping the boost.
pull the upper #1 main bearing and check it ..... that is the one that wears first .
for the price of a set of bearings , you be silly not to change them .
I am so glad I clicked on this page as i am about to do rings and main bearings. Vince Waldon is the man, so helpful to us youngins and noobs.
Just remember, youngins, Grampa Vince *strongly* advises complete engine removal and disassembly for *all* rebuilds.
Cheating is evil and rotten and will cause your teeth to fall out when you get to be my age.

That's what im talkin about
vince rules
Ok so I am going to check one main bearing next time I am at the car and see how it is looking and decide from there what I am going to do.
Another question, on my #2 and #4 piston instead of a nice smooth edge around the top there is a tiny place on each one where it kind of craters. Is this a problem and need to be dealt with or should it be fine?

I totally concur, do it once, do it right.
