i have a used k24 turbo i am putting it on my 1.9TD
are there any ways to check it other than taking all apart>

there is no left to right shaft play at all, and up and down is very very minimum like almost none but you can feel it move if your feeling very closely.....

hopefull someone knows a good way to check it!

any side to side play?  does it spin freely?  after that do as bert said and try it out.  only definitive way.

it only takes 30 minits to change a turbo, it wud take much longer to take it apart and inspect it

if it doesnt spit oil out at full thottle it shud be fine in my books, if it does a bit you can use thicker oil and probly get away with it. if loads, find another turbo
