Just finished rebuild, does this sound right - IDI Engine - VWDiesel.net The IDI, TDI, and mTDI source.

• This is the Volvo (VW built) 6 cylinder D24T that I just finished rebuilding, top to bottom.  Does it sound Ok?  To me it seems like it sounds fine, but you guys are the expert on these vw diesels.  If you didn't know, the d24T is identical to the VW 1.6T, but with two more cylinders.  
  
  This is the one that I was having trouble timing, and, unless I am totally crazy, my gauge reads the timing at 1.20?!?.  There is NO SMOKE, it starts up and runs perfectly even cold, and has no blowby.  It seems to run and very well, builds power and boost adequately.  
  
  I still need to:
  1. adjust boost (only at 8 psi max)
  2. possibly fiddle with timing some more, I'm concerned it's too advanced, but don't know how to tell for sure
  3. adjust low idle (currently at about 900)
  4. put 1,000 miles on it so that I can turn up the pump and add an IC!

• Way to keep these old diesels on the road!  A full rebuild like that takes a lot of money and commitment.  It sounds perfect.  Are you going up or down on your idle?  I suspect down which is probably alright considering the inline-6 is one of the smoothest engine designs.  I wouldn't go much below 900 RPM on a 4-cylinder because it would be too shakey.  I like keeping my headliner attached to the ceiling. :lol:

• Check the timing again, if it's too far advanced it may blow the inserts out of the head into the cylinders and ruin everything.  It happened to me once.

  Down.  The book calls for 750, and the cold start advance is sticking and keeping it from idleing down when it warms up.   THanks for the compliments.  I'm into the rebuild about $1500.00.  The parts, internally, are the same as the VW's so I was pleasantly surprised to find all the parts, pistons, rings, bearings, gaskets, etc, was about $1,200, and the machining came to $300.00.  It is my first diesel rebuild, and was thorougly enjoyable.

  I think I will do that next.  I was doing some reading and the IP on these is run off a pulley at the back of the camshaft.  The pulley on the back is not keyed, and I am not positive that it was perfectly aligned when I was putting the engine back together.  I'll re-ceheck it. and shoot for 1.00mm.
  
  I'm looking to set the boost at 12 psi.  I'm not sure what is normal, but that seems like a good number for the first 1,000 miles.  Is that about where you guys with stock motors run?
