Just blown my turbo!

Was working under my car today on the ramp (4 poster) to find out why my handling sucked (its a knackered ball joint!) and I got dripped on! looked up to find a huge patch of oil on the bulk head - lowered the car back down and pulled off my intercooler pipes - to find the main pipe to the intercooler soaked in oil!

Did think that it was a Garrett on it - now i'm not so sure! Where is best to get either my unit rebuilt - or what fits straight onto my engine as an upgrade?? (1991 SB engine code - mk2 golf)

My J reg GTD with SB engine had a k14 on it.
I was tempted to put a gt15 off a mk3 golf on mine, but the downpipe would cause issues with the gear linkage, so a straightforward swap would be any 1.6/1.9td turbo as far as i know

What should i do then? clean out the pipes and put a new crank breather unit in?

I've seen that some people put a gasser breather on which goes where the oil cap is. That way they have 2 breathers and can handle more flow with less oil.

Where is the breather unit - Please??? I hope it aint the turbo - i've just saved up £700 to get my rear panel repaired (rust) - wasnt looking forward to spending that on a new turbo!

Is there an easy way to test if its the turbo? Remove the boost pip end from the turbo to the intercooler - put a white sheet on the end of it and rev the engine?

I don't have a great picture, but the breather comes off the engine on the far right of the valve cover. You may or may not have the black tube that also connects to it. From there it goes to the line between your air filter and turbo. There is also a baffle which you can put under the valve cover if you don't have one, which helps block oil from going out the vent. The gasser vent screws on where the oil cap is, then the cap screws on top of it.
If the engine is running and you remove the oil cap, how much air do you feel coming out? If a lot, then the vent is probably the problem. If not much, then it could be the turbo.

Well, you could try disconnecting the vent hose, block off the hole on the intake hose and attach a longer length of hose to the vent hose and run it under the car. Then clean the intercooler pipe of oil and see if you get more oil in it after driving a bit.

Most any gasser at a junkyard I believe.

Going to take the pipe off the vent - bung the one on the inlet pipe and route a hose from the breather into a plastic coke bottle. The i'll clean out the boost pipes, then take it for a run and see what happens - oil in the catch tank = breather. Oil back in the boost pipes = turbo!

Does that make sunse?

No oil from the turbo! split the breather pod and it was choked! So its getting soaked in Redex overnight and then put back together!
