NTB: AC delete alternator setup for 1.6TD mk2 into mk1
« on: March 23, 2008, 02:39:16 pm »
here we go again. I'm trying to swap in a TD into my rabbit, and the AC was shot, along with the tensioner preventing me from using the AC pump to keep tension on the alternator. I need a complete swap, including brackets, tensioner, and alternator to bolt up to my engine.

Thanks.

The main bracket is the same, it's only the alternator and the tensioner that are different.

A little alternator/bracket info:

How to use an 90 amp AC alternator on a non-AC diesel, using an adjuster bracket from a '91 gasser.... and more.
I will sell you a non-AC alternator bracket for an A1, but it will cost you $75 plus shipping to get me to let go of it.

Is this anything like what you need. I removed it from a 1.6na diesel engine I bought off ebay. Don't know the year or what it came out of. Kanzan

Yep, that's a MK1 1.6NA alt bracket for Non-AC.

HEY, it even has the small upper bracket and the adjuster bar.
Only thing missing is the bolts, seems like a couple of the AC bracket mounting bolts will work but 2 are different.

yes, that is what I need, does that bracket have a different offset than the AC equipped bracket so I can use my AC alternator, or will I need to get a Non AC alternator as well?

I have the bolts that held the w/o air, alt mount to the water pump housing. 2 are the same as the w/ air, 2 are different length. Complete mount as pictured, with 4 correct bolts, $50.00 plus shipping. Sorry, I don't know anything about the alt offset.  Thanks, Kanzan

The Non-AC alt is different. The adjustment bracket hole is about 40 degrees offset, and the pulley is different. So, yeah, you'd probably need the alternator.

Another viable option is to fabricate a bracket to use your AC alt. Just make an offset bracket for the bottom. But, you'd still need the NON-ac alt pulley.

My previous link showed ways to use your AC alternator, or the differences between the mounting points.
The A1 bracket sets the alternator a little more to the driver's side (if I remember correctly) compared to the A2 bracket.
I tried the A1 bracket on my A2 and it set the alternator too far to the driver's side, too close to the radiator.

$50 is a pretty good deal, see if you can get him to throw the pivot bolt in too. It's a long allen head bolt, not real easy to find,... I had to buy a bag of them to get one.
The A1 alternator uses a thinner pivot bolt, than the A2 90 amp.
Did you take a look at my previous link? Because it sounds like you have an A2 alternator bracket and alternator.

I have both a1 and a2 AC alternators, and bracketry, and they both bolt up to my A2 TD engine, don't really look all that different to me. The brackets are ok, but the AC tensioners are both toast, I could probably make the A1 work, but I wanted to avoid putting stuff back in my car that didn't work.

I don't really have the fabricating equipment to make a bracket, unless i can get by with a portaband, and bench mount grinding wheel.

Thanks everyone for the ideas and help.
