Ok I have another project on the go besides the smokey jetta. I am also working on a 1980 Z28 and I recently picked up a turbo out of a 6.5l td and I am going to put it on the camaro. Everyone gasser guy that knows anything about turbos say that diesel turbos are poor. I just want to know if this turbo will hold up and not fly apart. It's going on a 5.7l small block chev.
Sorry about the non diesel topic.

i would think that it's big enough to at least not come apart. there were some early 80's firebirds that came with a turbo v8. give it a shot and see what happens. Actually, for some time I had wanted to try making a twin-turbo, twin CIS v8. each cylinder bank had it's own turbo and cis fuel injection. probably a pair of K26's would work great.

Hey Jeff, there is a really complete website dedicated to the early turbo'd Buicks and Pontiacs. Mainly V-6 stuff, but a few pages to the turbo'd V-8's, plus tons of links and tech tips. Check it out...

I've read that some turbos that came on diesel applications do not have compressor bearings / seals capable of handling vacuum and/or fuel in the compressor. On a diesel there is never vacuum or fuel in the compressor because no throttle valve exists, and fuel injection is direct into the head. On a gasser application you might run into a problem with a diesel turbo if you have a "draw through" carburator setup and/or if yo have the throttle valve mounted before the turbo (rather than in between turbo and intake manifold).
Two good books you should look at are "Turbochargers" by Hugh MacKinnes and "Maximum Boost" by Corkey Bell, both oriented towards homebrew turbo swaps, and explain these types of things plus more.

The trans am that came turbo'ed had the little 301 engine, a whole different animal than a 350. I think I'd want to do a lot of research before I tried this. Aren't the ratio's a lot different on diesel vs gas turbo's? How about 2 turbos off the early ford 4 cylinder gassers instead? One on each side. I Knew a guy that put one of the early mustang motors in a ranger pickup, wastegate was stuck and the this regularly put up 15 pounds of boost, about twice what it was supposed to.
