I pulled off the gooseneck from the turbo going to the intake on my 1.6TD, and I found it to have a bit of oil on the inside, like there is oil migrating past the bearings or seals in the turbo and making its way into the compressor side. I rebuilt this turbo and it is on a fresh motor....I have less than 200 miles on it.
I know ideally the compressor side should be clean, and free of oil, but how much might you find in there? The turbo rebuild was really straightforward, and I cant imagine I got anything wrong in there, and the turbine shaft looked perfect, I wonder what the deal is?
A few posts down there is a thread about oil line restrictors. I was thinking maybe I have too much oil going to the turbo. But I made up a stainless braided supply line, and the fittings for it have smaller orifices than the original fittings for the hard supply line, so I dont think I'm getting too much oil.
Maybe the turbo is just shot. I noticed after the rebuild it seemed to have a bit more radial play in the shaft than I expected, but the compressor wheel didnt hit the housing or anything so I figured it was fine. I also suspected that once it got an oil supply the oil would take up most of that play. Ideas?
It's probably just oil coming into the intake tract from the crankcase vent. I wouldn't worry about a bit of a film on the intake. You can check by looking at the intake tube between the turbo and the CCV port. If there is oil there then it is coming from the CCV. If not, it is coming from the turbo.
