Removing an Injection Pump
« on: March 19, 2008, 08:54:55 pm »
Ok I got 2 spare 1.6l IDI diesel motors out of some dead Rabbits and I want to get the IPs rebuilt so I can have a couple of spares ;).
However, how the heck do I get them off the engine!?
I've never attempted this before as I generally prefer the IP IN my engine and functioning rather than off ;).

I do most of the work on my car myself, but the few things I leave well enough alone are timing belts, IPs and head gaskets.

Any help??
Thanks!  :D

Need to pull the gear off where the timing belt is, then there is another 2 or 3 bolts in that area and one on the other side of the IP close to where the dipstick goes in.

You need a deep 13mm socket for the mounting bolts. You need an IP locking pin so you can keep the IP sprocket from turning when removing the sprocket bolt. The sprocket bolt is either 17 or 19mm. You need a 17mm open end or crowfoot wrench to remove the injection hard lines. you need a 13 or 15mm wrench or sprocket to loosen the timing belt tensioner bolt. You need a screwdriver to loosen the hose clamps. Finally, you need a gear puller to remove the IP sprocket from the IP shaft. The throttle cable is removed by hand and the cold start cable uses a slot screwdriver.

The only unusual tools you will need are the IP lock pin and the gear puller.

This thread shows where all the bolts that hold the pump to the engine are located. For a locking pin you can use a deep socket but if the timing belt if still on the engine you can just give the ratchet a good hit and it should break the bolt free. I usually use my hammer to hit the ratchet. Go Canadian Tire :)

For removing the gear you can hammer on it. If you do this, light taps are key as well as leaving the bolt for the gear still on so the pulley doesn't go flying. If you aren't using a soft face hammer (rubber) hit the timing belt so that it cushions the blow. It will pop off eventually. A gear puller would be best if possible. Obviously you wouldn't hit the timing belt if you planned to re-use it.
