New to VW diesel - couple of questions
« on: March 11, 2008, 06:59:51 am »
Hi, I am a person about to dive into the VW diesel world.  I am not  a total stranger to diesel, I had an old benz - a 300SD for a few years, a long time ago...

I am likely going to be getting a mid 90's Golf.  It seems to me that these cars are the AAZ, IDI turbo engines correct?

I am a bit of a tinkerer now a-days, and would like to mod the car for better mileage (if it makes it a bit faster, that is an ok by-product).

My specific questions are:

1. Intercooler - What is best to add to the car, and does it provide and mileage gains?  at stock boost, is there gains in power / mileage, or should it be chipped / boost increased mechanically to see the gains?

2. Injectors - I understand that larger injectors will provide more power, and on an older car could provide mpg improvements simply form being new and clean.  Which would be best to improve mpg?

3. Chips / tunes - any recommendations for best mpg?

4. Exhaust - I am guessing this is good on any diesel, anyone have specific recommendations / results?

thanks!!!

An AAZ has no computer, so no chip tuning, making it better for tinkering. Exhaust, the bigger, the better. I don't own a VW car, just the engine, so I can't help with the easiest IC. The IC may help a little with power itself, but basically it helps cool the air, and EGT's, so that you can turn the little screw and get more power. Injectors can help mileage and power if they are worn. Advancing the timing to 1.00-1.05mm can help too. Just be sure to get an EGT gauge if you turn up the fuel!!! Also, the boost pin from a 1.6 or a Cummins VE pump will give more power as the AAZ pin has no slope to it at all.
