Is it true that you can "use baking soda in a pinch"?Ive heard of cleaning"comet" type powders also.What is the real stuff,chemically?

i got some right from total seal. it's not expensive for what it 'can' do. (quickly seating rings is not a bad thing... :wink: )
i think it was around $10-20 bucks??? call and find out

As far as i understand it, the powder is just there to tell you when the walls are 100% oil free. In theory if you are methodical about cleaning and drying them you should be good to go . Remember the idea is to run the rings in dry. Maybe that's why comet would work, as it would change color if there was any moisture.

I would not put comet in an engine. Chlorine does bad things to all metals and oil as well.

"Bar Keeper's Friend" cleanser might work better- no chlorine. The Oxalic acid removes rust (H2 C2 O4-2H2O) and wouldn't hurt aluminum, like caustics I think.

if you want to get it dry use some of that orange cleaner crap. the best degreaser i've ever seen that is practically harmless. (unless swallowed of course :roll: )
