Hello Folks,
I've been lurking around for a while and am amazed at the wealth of knowledge many of you have.
I've been driving diesels both VW & MB on and off for the past 10 years and am currently driving a 92 Jetta 1.6 td with 455,000 km.
I plan to buy another pre TDI VW diesel this summer and was wondering what VW years (93 & up) and models in Canada had the 1.9 idi engines?
Also, what mechanicals are interchangeable between my 92 Jetta 1.6 td and the 93-97 Jetta\Golf Diesels?
Basically I plan to retire the above Jetta, and would like to use it as a source for extra parts for my next Vw diesel.
Thanks for your help!

1998 Golf was the last one in Canada I believe. Also used in some euro models like the transporter and some Skoda/Seat cars.
Here a guy is selling a BRAND NEW 1.9TD longblock. Yes, BRAND NEW with the crank issue already corrected from factory (uses the d-style snout). You could drop this in a Mk2 and have a great, light, reliable diesel.

Thanks for the help!
Although I think I need to rephrase my question.
In what year & models did VW introduce the 1.9 idi engine?
Can I find a 1993+ VW with a 1.6td idi engine - or was this engine replaced by the 1.9td idi?
As for the 1.9td longblock - thanks for the heads up. But unfortunately my 92 Jetta is basically on its last legs, and I wanted to see if any of the mechanicals would work on a 1993+ Vw Diesel.

Yes, 1992 was the last year for the 1.6TD. In 1993 VW went to the 1.9 TD in Canada and later on brought out the 1.9 TDI. So the 1.9 TD (AAZ) was in Canada from 1993 to 1998.
I'm not sure when the TDI came out as there was some overlap in the years of the 1.9 TD and the 1.9 TDI's.
1998 1/2 was the last year for the IDI 1.9 so cars produced after june of 1997 would have the TDI. although, they did have a surplus of 1.9 IDI diesels, so occasionally you will find the odd 1999 with the IDI but is is very rare. we occasionally get them at work.
Lots of stuff will fit. My '92 Jetta has an AAZ, bolts right up to the older tranny, pretty much a drop in. Turbos will bolt up, but oil drains are an issue. Fuel pump /injectore are different, but the boost LDA pin from a 1.6 is supposed to be a big improvement in a 1.9. probably lots of other things too.
Did the AAZ cars have the same tranny as the 1.6's?
