How much reliable HP and Torque can I get from a 1.6td
« on: February 27, 2008, 09:49:19 pm »
Really, how much could I get out of one of these without suffering longevity and driveability concerns? I have a Westy Weekender Syncro which is very heavy, and I live above 5000 feet, and I AM going to make my bus a turbo diesel in the not too distant future. I would love a tdi or a 1.9td or a 5 cyl td but all of them are either too expensive, too hard to get or both. So if I could get about 100-120 Hp and about 150-200 lb/ft. of tourqe without trashing motors along the way, I would be very happy. I have a G60 motor in it right now and am rebuilding it (hopefully done this weekend) and converting it to turbo (3 superchargers...No more). I get plenty of power and all but I get HORRIBLE fuel mileage whereas, I make my own fuel for my diesel tractor and would love to do the same for my bus, not to mention the better fuel mileage of the oil burner. (french fry oil that is)

Thanks, I absolutely would be running both. I have the factory oil filter mount cooler from the g60 that I could move to the td, and also I have an assortment of Intercoolers that I have tried with the gasser. With my turbo conversion that I'm doing to the g60 motor, I have a Saab Blackstone Intercooler that I am going to try, I have read good things about it.

What kind of Stuff? What does it take to make the most reliable horsepower/torque?  Can a 1.6 be bored out/sleeved to a larger displacement? What about the 1.9 head mod that I've read about, what does that do for you? Keep in mind that I am looking to keep stock driveability/reliability.

just kidding, driveability/reliability, forget it, i have worked more on my car than drive it exaly.

The best way is to choose a stock T2 or T3 (K14 or K24) with some DIY adjustments to your pump, you would make about 110a140hp, most easy way, less work, much fun!

I have dynoed 200+ from my 1,7. Driveability is not like stock, itīs MUCH better :) Canīt say about reliability yet, canīt be very good. Iīm driving it daily, but only few thousand km so far...

I agree that those big numbers from a small motor will kill reliability. So about those mods that I wrote of...? What other sorts of things should I do to get about 100-110hp?
