Best matched 02a for the MK1 and the b3 project...
« on: August 07, 2007, 05:03:18 pm »
So, I'm thinking on down the road here towards winter and the 02a swap that'll be happening with the mTDI and also the motor I'll be building for the b3 which is another mTDI setup using a pretty close to stock 1z motor by the time I'm done.

I've also go a CTN trans sitting here... with the following ratios...
3.778=2.118=1.360=1.029=0.755=3.157

Then I've got an AYK 16v trans in the passat...

3.778=2.118=1.429=1.029=0.837=3.684

As you can see...the biggest differences come down to basically the FD of the two trans. 3.157 for the CTN TDI trans and 3.68 for the 16v AYK trans. I have the ability to get another CTN trans for the b3 swap, but I was thinking about the MK1 and how its more "performance" minded rather than economy, etc. Well...its a blend of both. Currently, its not much fun with the 3.89 in there, makes the lower gears really interesting ... I was thinking how the AYK trans might fair in the MK1 and then use the CTN in the passat. With the 16v FD, it would drop the revs (not as much as the CTN would of course).

Just considering the use of the 16v trans. I'd need to figure out what my crusing RPM's would be with both trans at a specific speed, and I def. know that the 16v one wouldn't be as low as the CTN trans...but, it could make things more interesting and put me right in the power band when I want it without being TOOO harsh like the 3.89 currently is.

The b3 project is going to be a nice blend of power and economy, I could keep the AYK in it, but it seems like a bit of a waste to do so since I'm looking for more economy and comfortable cruising with it...

Just looking for some ideas...maybe its poll time!

Joe

I'd say use the TDI tranny in both.  You will have plenty of power with the taller gears in the Rabbit :)  FWIW the tdiclub rally team guys use a gasser MK IV tranny, but they aren't on the highway, they do rallies.

fixed my befuddled brain writing :oops:

Check the difference:

engine RPM VS drive shaft RPM (cardan)

AYK 16V:   ...........  02A CTN:
1st 13.9:1 .........  1st 11.88:1

2nd 7.80      ...........  2nd 6.68

3rd 5.22      ...........  3rd 4.28

4th 3.75      ...........  4th 3.18

5th 3.09      ...........  5th 2.36

        Your 5th gear AYK 16V, I suppose 185/65/14 tire for two example:

        Your 4th gear 02A CTN

You won't need the ayk for power, the CTN will be fine in a mk1 due to the light weight, you may want to consider a proper differential like quaife or peloquin to keep the car going straight! If you play with the motor at all the CTN will be fine, the engine is very strong and happier at lower rpms.

yah...after doing my own calcs... (Martin, your program is pretty "trick"), I'd def. want the CTN in either application. Just was thinking on the cost savings side of things...but oh well...way beyond that.

:)

Something just opened up as well and a pelo or similar LSD may be in order for the CTN going in the Mk1
It'll be so nice to rid myself of the 3.89 currently that I'm using...

I plan to someday test between a "ATA" G60 transmission and a "CTN" B4 transmission  to see which will work best at the track (1/4 mile). I have a feeling the CTN might be the best of the necessary shift to 5th gear

Did you ever get to run your 1/4 mile test's?

To update this thread...

I now have two CTN's waiting to go in their respective swaps. One into the mk1 mTDI and another that'll be going into the b3 mTDI swap this summer. :) Might work on refinishing one of them this weekend :)

Wow...this is back from the dead!

Yep.  Search is my friend.  Trying to do some good learning on the CTN.
