Embarrasing question
« on: February 15, 2008, 01:55:55 pm »
I can't find the glow plug relay on my (new) '81 rabbit caddy.  Where is it, please?
the car has had some prior wiring issues, but not finding it is bizarre.  I've never had a rabbit before so I don't even know where they are supposed to be and the Haynes is useless for that.
Thanks

It's not attached to the relay panel, it's just "floating" around under the dash hear the fuse panel.

My rabbit didn't have one because the PO felt the need to cut it out and install push buttons

I looked and couldn't find it.  The one on my Vanagon is obvious.
The car has the correct speedo/odometer (title records + diesel fuel only lettering).
The rest of the instrument cluster was out of a later gasser, with oxs & upshift light, and non-original led's.  ratty printed circuit.  Dash harness may be non-original.  fuse block may be non- original.
So today I gutted the cluster, cleared away the stock plastic to the right of the speedo for perfectly empty space.  I made a stained wood dash and added a 3 gauge cluster + stock fuel gauge, tomorrow I'll install a few indicator lights.
I also pulled out the dark green light shade and am putting a new homemade clear piece in front that doesn't have a clock stem in it.

Is it possible, since the car was in California that they didn't even hook the G. P. circuit back up?  he had complained of starting issues- that plus running B100 and I can see why. ''
I'll trace the gp circuit tomorrow to confirm this when it is warm and light-
but looks like I'll be putting a manual switch in as well. ''

trace the big red wire that hooks to the glow plugs back to the fire wall and through the fire wall and it should lead back to the relay! and it should be cliped on top of the fuse panel the relay has 2big copper spaid terminals with a number of other smaller spaid terminals!
there is a pic.floating around here of one some one might chim in and post a link to it?
hope that helps a little?
thanks Duane

Yes,  I found it!  Thanks all.  One more thing- it appears to be an ME block- what year was that from?

Thanks for the year- yeah, it's a hydraulic engine (yea!) nice to have one of each.
