Question for Quantum owners
« on: April 02, 2005, 05:03:45 am »
Do any of you have your owers manual? I put mine away for "safekeeping" so I wouldn't lose it, say no more --  :x
I know my manual listed the mounting angle of the engine, I've looked all through the Bentley and can't find it in there.
It's definately more than the standard 15 deg. used on A1/A2 etc., but way less then the 50 deg. used in Vanagons.
By trying to measure from the bellhousing it looks like about 30 deg., anybody know fer shur  :?:

I can't see this info in any of my books...
I thought maybe the sump gasket was horizontal but no :? .
 Sump bottom?... No.  :?
Slopes the other way on my TD  :!:
Maybe from the engine mountings. :?:
I suppose from a horizontal pair of bell housing bolt holes is the way to go...
I assume its for the 1.6 TD  :?:

Is it that your creating something and don't yet have an engine?

Question for Quantum owners
« Reply #2 on: April 03, 2005, 03:22:22 pm »
Mark,
I've already got the engine (1.6TD from Quantum) and I'm investigating mounting it up to a Type 1 aircooled trany (actualy a Porshe 356 741 tranny).
The outfit in Kalifornia (Kennedy Engineered Products) that makes adaptor plates offers them with a choice of mounting angles, straight up, 15 deg as in A1, A2, etc, or 50 deg as in the Vanagon.
As I measure the Quantum bellhousing (using the two top bolts as "straight up", just as you suggested) it looks like about 30 degrees. I know the US owners manual that I have (but can't find) gives the mount angle in the specs, but maybe you didn't get that in the UK.
It's to my advantage for vertical clearance to mount it as inclined as possible, either by getting them to make me a custom plate, or by redrilling/tapping the plate.

Maybe from the engine mountings. Question

That's a good idea

I'll try that next s soon as I get it on the stand. Won't be for a while, gashed my thumb on the sawed off exhaust pipe on the turbo yesterday. Took 4 stitches and a splint to close

Thanks for the help,

It's frustrating that my books don't show a clear end on view of the bolt holes for the bell housing. Some of the pictures are described as being for the 5 ganger and the 4 ganger which obviously isnt true for the bolt holes. (But they arent talkin' bolt holes I'll conceed)
I'll check this out tomorrow but it looks like there is a single bolt at the top with the next two almost horizontal (but not quite  :x ) with the one on the right (as viewed along the gearbox towards the engine) being about a cm higher!
Isn't this situation that you're aiming for requiring a home made bend in the oil pick up foot to compensate for the extra tilt?

What's the cost of one of these Kennedy plates? If they're expensive just get some 1/4 " plate and using cardboard templates mark out your own.  Just get a 'gas cutter' to  cut the circumference out!
I'm dreaming of putting my spare TD engine into my 1970 Bedford CF Camper....

I've made a "clearance tester" that is a pair of plywood discs. One fits into the crank pully of the air cooled V Dub engine that's mounted in the car now, the other disc is offset from the first to index the location of the cam pulley enclosure of the diesel engine. This shows that about a thirty degree mount angle would be ideal for clearance, and would allow the engine cover to close normaly. As it seems that the Quantum engine is mounted at around that angle anyway, no mods to the oil pickup or pan should be needed. If I went all the way to the Vanagons 50 deg mount, then I would certainly need to make changes.

The complete swap kit from Kennedy runs about $400. The adaptor plate is not the problem for me. I have a pattern cutting plasma torch in my "Little Shop of Horrors" and could probably cut a plate, but I also would need a hybrid flywheel with a VW 6v ring gear and a WC crank hub. I don't have a lathe big enough to produce that, but it's included in the KEP kit.

I've also found a source for a high torque (530 ft/#!) hybrid gear reduction starter that runs on 12v but has a 6v pinion gear. The aftermarket for air cooled VW parts is nothing short of amazing  :!:

As I said in a previous post here, I once saw a Jowet Jupiter with a Vauxhall engine fitted by means of a flame cut plate, how's that for an oddball combo from your island  :?:
