ARP Sizes / Part Nos?
« on: February 11, 2008, 03:33:12 pm »
I just got an interesting response from ARP Fasteners. I asked:
Quote
I am about to rebuild a Volkswagen 1.6L Turbo Diesel and was looking through your catalog trying to figure out what would fit. At the very least I would like to get head studs (preferred) or bolts. But any other fasteners you would recommend are definitely up for consideration. The only thing I saw that explicitly mentioned the 1.6 was the main studs, and that didn't mention the diesel. Any help you can offer is appreciated!

They replied:
Quote
HELLO SCOTT
WE DON'T HAVE ANYTHING FOR THE DIESEL. HERE IS A CALC SHEET TO FILL OUT SO I CAN SEE WHAT YOU NEED. FILL ONE OUT FOR EACH SIZE STUD YOU HAVE.
THANKS
RONF

I thought that was odd, since I've read of people using them. It seems he forgot to attach the calc sheet, so I'll have to email him back to get that, but I thought I'd post this here first.

Which stuff do you guys use on the 1.6TD?

The contact info for the tech I used at ARP:

Chris Brawn  1-805-525-1497

He was very helpful and knew what he was talking about.

I was able to get a better price however through  headbolts.com.  If the guy did not have the part he would order it.  He was cheaper than summit.

ARP part #s

Head Studs..........................251-4701
Main Studs...........................204-5402
Con Rod bolts 1.6 and 1.7......104-6002
Trans ring gear bolt kit 020 ...204-3001
Oil pump bolts.......................661-1014

Hope this helps
Jim

The head studs are the ones that were reccommended on this site. They should fit both 1.9 and 1.6. Correct me if I am wrong.
Same deal with the main studs. Got the info from here.
Con rod bolts, I sent my rods to ARP for them to check and find correct replacement size. This is what they reccommend. I would have sent in 1.9 rods but no one sent me any. I will pass along my contact info at ARP if someone wants to send some. These rod bolts are for the 1.6 and 1.7. I was told they offered about an additional 20,000 psi of strength and a much greater shear strength. I do not know if they will fit a 1.9
The trans ring gear bolt kit is for the 020 tranny's.
The oil pump bolts are direct replacement for the bolts out of my pump. I do not know if these are the same size as the newer 36mm pump people are talking about here on the site. Anyone know if the 36mm uses different size bolts?

All above refer to IDI. The oil pump was from mid to late 80's hydro TD.

same thing I got when I called yesterday although he wasnt too informative and didnt want to send the spek sheet for me to fill out!

He just threw some measurements at me that he needs and I was more interested in dealing with the guy at racewear as he knew exactully what i needed and e-mailed me before I got off the phone!

Racewear  it is then....

I thought that the 1.6L were all 12mm head bolts, but when I pulled one of mine this morning (blew the head gasket on Saturday   ) I measured it at 11mm (10.85mm actually).  Apparently there was a production break on these heads?

I guess this means no ARP head studs for me.   :(

To upgrade to 12mm, you'd have to drill and tap the block, correct?  What about the hole size in the head?  Drill that, too?

Unfortunately, this is not an option.  It's my daily driver that I spent $175 for.  Adding the turbo tripled its value.  I think I'm stuck with stock bolts and a 3-notch HG.

I bought some ARP head studs for my 1.6l with the 11mm head bolts.

Here are the part #'s:

ATP4.650-1LB.....Head studs.....Quanity in package:1
300-8394...........12Pt nuts........Quanity in package:10
APW1316N.........Washers.........Quanity in package:1

I ordered from ARP directly. Their phone number is (800) 826-3045. All of this came out to about $100 with shipping, much cheaper than Raceware. [/b]

I've been told to use VW gasser headstuds. Still stronger, but in an 11mm size.

11mm bolts were used on 1.5 diesels and 1.6 engines up until (I think) mid-'81, when the changeover to 12mm bolts occurred.

I believe there is a set of used gasser headstuds on the vortex for $50 shipped, should work on your 11mm head.
Search for my profile and check my watched topics list.... I bumped it.
