Ok, I know what my IDI timing should be set at, but once I go TDI, What will it need to be then? I heard they like advance and seem to remember reading 1.15mm somewhere on the board. To further muddy the waters, it seems it may depend on head size as well by this graph I swiped from TDIClub which shows the curve for an 11mm head starts around 4 degrees later than for a 10mm head, which I imagine starts later than a 9mm head. I will have a 10 mm.

I already see this pic, and I wonder how the guy make to measure this, It's wrong.
I have both came plate here and both have a different profile, the 11mm one have a smoother curve in begin, It's easy to see with the came in my hand, and when I make a graph, It's totally different than this pic.
The came plate profile have no effect on the initial timing (start-up timing), you will place your timing according to what the person who built your pump will say you, probably between .80 and 1.00mm.
For an example, initial timing on electronic TDI have no effect for the dynamic timing up to 1200-1300 + or - RPM, the car is only more hard to start in the cold morning, but with mechanical pump the builder will have balanced well the initial timing with the dynamic timing curve, with a bench test, they are miraculous :wink:

i started at .7 or so and it barely ran,so i kept stepping up
I believe I set my pump at 1.00mm or .95mm. Any more advance and the engine sounded like a hardcore cummings...very loud dieselly sounding compared to a e-tdi. The engine would actually run pretty smoothly at .8 but I was concerned with cold starting in below freezing weather as my ducato pump does not have any timing advance features for a cold start. I've started my m-tdi @ 0F and it started right up but I would have to blip the throttle because the idle was low.
