1978 Rabbit - Needs help!
« on: January 31, 2008, 06:16:50 pm »
Hi everyone,
This is my first post here, and let me just say that this forum is awesome!

I have a 1978 rabbit diesel C, 4 door. The body is pretty sound - only minor dents and rust. My paint and interior are completely thrashed, no radio or speakers. I will post some pics maybe tomorrow. What I need help with are some ideas for how to fix up the interior of one of these cars. Does anyone know how to put in new carpet, etc? Also, my suspension is really sloppy. I've looked, but I haven't been able to find performance springs for this old of a model. Maybe I'm not looking in the right place. Also, what are my options for switching out suspension parts with newer model volkswagens? If somebody could point me in the right direction as far as where to get parts, that would be awesome.
Thanks!

get suspension for 1975 to 1984 rabbit. don't use newer model stuff or it will lift the car up in the air if it fits at all.

carpet pull out the old, put down the new. unbolt anything that gets in your way.

any other questions?

So any parts from 75-85 will fit? (suspension wise)

Do you need to use any type of glue to hold the carpet down? Are there any type of templates used to cut it? I guess I could use the old carpet as a template.

Thanks for the reply.

carpet is form fitted so find a nice used one or buy an aftermarket one with good reviews. when you take out the old one you'll see how things are held.

1985 suspension is not correct. 1975-1984 should be fine although the really early stuff had metal strut caps and a few other differences. for ease of install probably anything 1980-84 should suffice and be the easiest to source.
