What's a CS, and why?

I have searched and cannot find a complete summary on what exactly makes the stock vanagon CS block engines different than the other 1.6's?
  ? mm headstuds, ? block, ? rods or pistons, ? crank. ? pump.
Which of these are different from an '82 1.6 n/a rabbit, for instance, and why?  Is there anything about it (besides the oil pan :) ) that makes it especially worth rebuilding vs. another mech. lifter 1.6?

Hi,

i have that fine Engine in my '85 Transporter..http://rapsdb.rapsinfo.de/detail.php?id=2513

there are some differences:
all engines up to 1982 had smaller space between the lifters,
so an other tool for holding the lifter down when adjusting valves is needed..

else there is no special difference.
for a daily driver i would take a hydraulic lifter-motor:
less noisy and valves are maintenance-free.
