Turbo for 1.9
« on: January 17, 2008, 06:59:10 pm »
Will the Garrett TA03 fit my 93 1.9?  My turbo shop at work here has a rebuilt one on the shelf.  I need a new turbo and one of Daves SS downpipes.  Thanks

TA03..?  Can you post a pic of it?

What flange does it have? The answer to your question really depends on the flange shape your existing manifold has..

I suspect that your manifold has a 3 bolt triangular mount if the manifold is from the 1.9, if the turbo is the same (3 bolts, same pattern) then it should work - you will need to also think about clocking it so that oil supply and drainage and the cold side line up with your existing piping, or you will end up needing to fab that stuff from scratch, which isn't usually cheap.

Question for you, why not just replace the turbo with a good used stock one.

Does anyone else know what turbo came on the 1.9 in 93?

you will have to change your manifold to either a trapezoidal bolt pattern or a rectangular, depending on the model of turbo.  I beleive the only time the only trapezoidal T3's came on VW applications.

It has the correct flange.  I guess I should have worded the question differently.  It will fit in I am just looking to see if anyone knows if it is a good choice.  This turbo comes off the 1.6.  I work at a high performance diesel shop so I have access to our full turbo shop.  I have turned the pump up and the stock turbo is too small.  Appearantly I have been told the 1.6 is a much better turbo to run on it.

if it's the turbo off the 1.6 and it's a garret it's what we call a T3 around here.

It's a decent choice, you might also consider a k24.. what turbo was on it? k14?

IMHO "better" is in the eye of the beholder !!

The OEM KKK K14 is a "better" choice if you want the torque to come on soon (2000+ RPM) and only need/want 15-20psi -ish.

The Garrett T3 is a "better" choice if you are ok waiting until 3000 RPM for the torque but want it to come on gangbusters... up to 30psi and beyond, given enough fuel.

I've got one of each... not sure which I "prefer" actually.... but neither is "better" as far as I'm concerned.  The 3000 RPM kick from the T3 certainly is more noticeable  to my passengers ;-)

Thanks for the help guys.  I do have a need for more air so the T3 looks like the one for me.  Still learning the VW stuff.  Any questions on Dodge Ford or Chevy diesel, I am your man, this stuff,  well still learning.  Thanks again.
