Its an '84 that the original owner purchased with an extended warrentee. The original owner ran it past 100K miles and threw a timing belt.
The dealer honored the extended warrentee by installing a 1.5 motor with the original 1.6 pump. The car ran like crap, but the original owner ran it any way, putting around at minimal power settings untill the ring lands filled with carbon and pushed the rings out to the point that they wore out.
He sold it to a gentleman who 'always wanted to work on a diesel'. He took the guts out of the motor in his back yard. He then gave up on it but mowed the grass around it, got grass clippings all over the bear block.
The body was in good shape, so I asked him if he wanted to sell it. He said he'd think about it. A week later his wife blew a gasket, and demanded he get rid of it instantly. I got it for nothing.
I always wondered what a 1.5 would do if it was turboed. So I rebuilt the motor that came with the car: new rings, bearings, valve guides, valves (turbo valves in the exhaust holes), Raceware 11mm head studs, rebuilt a K24 turbo, turbo plumbing, Passenger Performance Dave's 2.5" mild steel down pipe, 2.5" exhauste with a Cherry Bomb glass pack, Spruce thermocouple pre turbo, Booste gauge, dropped a screw into the blow off valve, and filled the banjo bolt on the waste gate line with RTV.
The 1.5TD language came from a Bosch rebuid shop in Chicago. They were confused when they recieved the 1.5 yellow dot pump with the LDA on it that I built. They contacted Bosch in Germany and asked what to do. Bosch Germany gave them 1.5TD specs to set the pump up.
The rest is history
