Glowplug timing control/newbie, help

Is there an alternative to a VW glowplug control unit from the dealer? I can't believe that buying a new one would cost nearly $400 CAN.

Thanks for your advice.

Find one at a salvage yard, post in WTB, check with NAPA or such.

When you get one, PUT A RELAY on its output!!!!!!!

Usually that is the portion that fries. One or two 40 Amp relays to feed the glow plugs from the batt (via a fuse and larger wire) will keep this from happening again (one hopes).

Or a large switch (amp wise) and bypass  everything.

Get an old external starter solinoid from crappy tire and and put a switch on your dash that activates the coil for the solinoid.  Have the switch spring return then you heat as long as you are holding the button.

Would someone be able to describe the location of the glow plug control unit on an A3 Jetta?
